Should I do ROTC in college?

I really want to do it, for the comraderie, the discipline, the leadership, and because there's always been something in me that wanted to go into the military and serve/protect the people of my country.
However, there's a huge, glaring problem that I don't think I would ever be able to intentionally kill or hurt anyone unless they've done something seriously wrong. On a battlefield with the enemy, you have no idea who you're shooting at. They would be soldiers just like us, and if they are part of the Taliban, who knows their life story and how they came into that? I am such a softy, and I recognize that is an obvious issue if I want to join the military.

Luckily the first 2 years in ROTC (out of 4) you're not obligated to join the military. So I suggest just trying the first year and see what you think. I was prior service myself and did 4 years of JROTC, Junior Officer Training Corps in high school. My husband has also been deployed 3 times and he has very real accounts of military life. He is still active duty.

Unfortunately, yes thinking you would not be able to fight could hinder you later while serving. There are those who THINK they can and end up freezing and well, to put it lightly, sometimes don't make it. (not all people). There will be instances where they'll send out children to lure soldiers into "helping" them only to get hurt by an IED. I know gruesome but those are very real scenarios to consider. That's when your discipline and training should kick in.
