Auto engine trouble. My pulleys and main serpentine belt are always whistling. How do I silence?
The pulleys for my alternator, fan, AC, etc and my serpentine belt whistle very loudly when I start the car in the morning. It subsides after about ten minutes of driving, but it still occurs. There is also a tapping sound. I think the tapping sound is coming from a baffle in the exhaust system. Not sure. Do you know how I can silence the whistling sound. Belt dressing seems to make it worse at first.
If I used WD-40, would that work on the inside of the pulleys but not touching the belt?
I'm gonna guess that you have a gm truck, or suv. They are noted for alternator problems. But I would first get a new belt, because they can stretch, dry out. And if you are putting belt dressing or wd-40 on it, that will multiply the belt noise. I would strongly recommend going to get a new belt, and while you or the mechanic, are changing it, check all the pulleys. Try turning the pulleys with no belt on, you should feel one of the trying to turn a little harder. I wouldn't wait too long, or you may be walking home. ps..............post what kind of vehicle it is. thanks
