The Thar Desert Camel Safari

The Desert Camel Safaris of India are one of the most adventurous and romantic holiday getaways. The Thar Desert has magnificent citadels and extremely colorful and un-spoilt villages, with a colorful culture and rich historic background. To truly experience the desert you must be on a camel.

A camel safari is a great way to see the entire desert - villages, wildlife, palaces and forts. Few other ways can match the experience of wandering about the city or countryside on a camel back, absorbing the rich heritage of Rajasthan

The Camel Safaris are found in Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, and Bikaner, and also in the wild life sanctuaries of Rajasthan, India. Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, and Bikaner once were princely states of the desert with palaces, courtyard mansions and intricately carved temples.

Jaisalmer

This is the city of kings. Places to see are the ancient monuments Badabagh, Manak Chowk and the Jain Temples situated on the outskirts of Jaisalmer, Baisakhi, and Ramkundra. These places are best explored with a camel ride. The Sam Sand Dunes, lie just 42 km away from the main city of Jaisalmer. The dunes of Sam are the most picturesque and romantic destinations that you can enjoy through a camel safari. Sunset at the dunes gives you a glimpse of paradise on earth. You can also enjoy the lovely sights of the Damodara and Beri of Kanoi on your way to the Sam Sand Dunes.

Jodhpur

This city reflects the vibrant culture and the true spirit of the Thar Desert. The places to visit on the camel safaris are the Meherangarh Fort, Umaid Bhawan Palace, Girdikot, Sardar market, Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace), Jaswant Thada and the Mandore Gardens. On the rides you will also see the Bishnoi villages, quaint lakes, impressive palaces and the wildlife sanctuaries.

Bikaner

Bikaner lies in the northern part of Rajasthan. It is a vibrant and lively city full stunning sounds and tastes. The major places to explore in Bikaner are Junagarh Fort, Lalgarh Palace, Deshnoke Temple, Gajner Wildlife Sanctuary and Fort Museum. You can appreciate and relish the bucolic city with the unusual camel rides.

Safaris

There are a variety of safaris offered by the Great Indian Desert. You could choose a short trek around the cities or upon a longer safari that would take you all around the Thar.

A typical full Thar Desert safari will take you to the ruins of Lodurva close to Jaisalmer, the oasis at Anasagar, the sand dunes of the Samm and the water source of Moolsagar. The days are for traveling on the ubiquitous hump-backed camel and sight seeing the rich culture, heritage and life styles of the colorful and royal state of Rajasthan. The nights are for entertainment and festivals. Rajasthan is famous for its dances an music plus for its puppet shows. On the camels-halts you will experience the lives of the villagers in the deserts.

Preparation

The camel safari is adventurous and exciting, but it can be dangerous if you are not well prepared. Temperature can be your biggest problem be it the searing heat of the day, or the biting chilliness of the night. The temperature can range from 0 degrees to 30 degrees.

There are certain things that you must have on the camel safari at all times

  • Large rimmed sun hats
  • Sufficient amounts of cotton and woolen clothes
  • Cotton caps, scarves and umbrellas
  • Sunscreen creams, moisturizers and lip salve
  • Mineral water torch and knife
  • First aid kit
    • And the most important a well trained guide who knows the Thar dessert like the back of his hand.
    • Rajasthan is land of folklores and myths, and maybe, just maybe you can catch a glimpse of it on the back of a camel.
